Speech and language skills underpin every child’s learning. This course is an introduction to Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) and how these impact on a child’s learning. You will learn ways to support communication development in the classroom.

 

Course outline:

- Understanding language development- what should we expect?

- What is SLCN?

- How to develop children’s communication skills through;

         The way we talk

         Providing opportunities to communicate

         Being aware of the physical environment

 

The course will be run by Charmaine Gordon and Kelly Down - Speech and Language Therapy Team at Slated Row

 

Suitable for teachers and teaching assistants in Primary classes

 

Charmaine Gordon is a Speech and Language Therapist MRCSLT.

Charmaine graduated in 2009 with a 1st class Honours Degree in Speech and Language Therapy. She has 5 years experience working with a paediatric caseload. This includes pre-school children, mainstream schools, language units and special schools. She now works in two special schools in Milton Keynes, delivering specialist speech and language therapy in the classroom setting. Her role also includes training for teaching staff and parents on specialist interventions for children with speech, language and communication needs.

 

Kelly Down, Speech and Language Therapy AssistantKelly has over 12 years experience working with adults and children with speech, language and communication needs. She is a trained British Sign Language Tutor and also delivers Signalong training. She specialises in Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) which includes making visual resources, signing and using high tech communication aids with children.
